WATOC Congress 2028

The triennial congress of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists, held since 1987. It brings the global theoretical and computational chemistry community together for plenary lectures, oral communications and poster sessions, preceded by a Young WATOC day for early-career researchers.

WATOC Congress runs January 9–14, 2028 in Mérida.

What it is

This is the 14th Triennial Congress of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists (WATOC), an association that promotes the field and links researchers in it worldwide. The congresses have run every three years since 1987. The 2028 congress is organized by Profs.

Gabriel Merino and Annia Galano, with Cinvestav (the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional) in Mérida as the collaborating institution. It is an academic meeting, not a commercial exhibition. The program combines plenary lectures, invited contributions, oral communications and poster sessions.

Themes run from electronic-structure theory and molecular dynamics to catalysis, spectroscopy, materials science, medicinal chemistry, machine learning and quantum computing.

Young WATOC on January 8

• A one-day pre-conference for early-career researchers, held the day before the main congress.
• It is open to all registered WATOC 2028 participants, with no separate registration.
• Speakers are chosen from submitted abstracts and must have defended their PhD in 2020 or later. There is no poster session.

Abstracts

• Only registered participants can submit abstracts.
• The organizer lists 150 oral communication slots. Oral and Young WATOC submissions that are not selected default to posters.
• Abstracts are plain text with a 350-word maximum; figures and tables are not allowed.

The association has announced Brisbane, Australia as the host of the 2031 congress.
