IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) Meetings 2026

The IETF holds three week-long meetings a year, rotating among Asia, Europe and North America. The Working Groups that develop Internet standards meet there in person and online. They are working sessions for engineers, operators and researchers, with no exhibit hall or booths.

IETF 127, the November IETF meeting, runs November 14–20, 2026 at Hilton Union Square, San Francisco.

What it is

The Internet Engineering Task Force holds three week-long meetings a year where its Working Groups, which write Internet standards, meet in person and online. Verisign is the host of IETF 127. The IETF is clear that these are working meetings and not conferences: there is no exposition hall, no booths and no advertising, and sales and marketing staff are told they will get little from attending.

The people who take part are engineers and developers at networking vendors, network and service operators, academics and researchers, standards consultants, civil society groups and individuals. Participants attend as individuals, not as representatives of their employers. The Internet Research Task Force meets alongside the IETF.

How the week runs

• Saturday–Sunday, Nov 14–15: the IETF Hackathon and Code Sprint. The Hackathon is held in San Francisco and online.
• Sunday: events for new participants start in the afternoon. The evening brings HotRFC lightning talks and the Welcome Reception.
• Monday–Friday: Working Group, BoF and Research Group sessions in parallel tracks. The Administrative Plenary is normally on Wednesday afternoon. The meeting ends on Friday afternoon, November 20.

Registration and logistics

• Everyone must register and pay a fee, whether they attend onsite or remotely. Fee waivers are available, and the fee covers all of the week's meetings.
• If the host holds a social event, it is a separate ticket, bought through the registration system.
• The Hackathon is free, but you have to register for it. You can register for the Hackathon without registering for the main meeting.
• You need a free IETF Datatracker account to register.
• Coffee, tea and snacks are served at breaks, but meals are not included. Free onsite childcare is offered first-come, first-served when it is announced.

IETF 128 is in Kuala Lumpur on March 6–12, 2027, and IETF 129 is in Berlin on July 17–23, 2027.
